Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 is a sunscreen created by Black women for people of color. I tried this product for a week and here are my thoughts.
What is it?
Black Girl Sunscreen is infused with avocado oil, jojoba, carrot juice, cacao, and sunflower oil. These oils help to moisturize your skin, even your skin tone and reduce signs of aging. It is advertised as a protective moisturizer that dries clear. This was very important to me because there are a lot of sunscreens on the market but rare are those who don't leave a ghostly cast on dark complexions
Black Girl Sunscreen is recommended to be applied 15 minutes before sun exposure and re-applied every 2 hours. This sunscreen is natural, cruelty-free and reef safe. Moreover, it has an SPF 30 which is the minimum you should be wearing on a daily basis if you want to prevent premature aging due to sun rays, reduce hyperpigmentation as well as diseases like cancer.
I tested out this moisturizer for a week and I mainly wanted to see how it performed on oily skin and under makeup. The first thing I noticed was how lightweight the sunscreen is. A little goes a long way so, depending on how you use it, a tube can last for months and at a retail price of $18, you can't go wrong. A pea size of the Black Girl Sunscreen was able to cover my face and some of my neck. The second thing I noticed was how radiant my skin looked. It gave me a fresh glow which made me a bit cautious about the product as I have oily skin and looking greasy within a few hours is not a goal of mine. The third thing I noticed is that the cream does dry clear! The Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 does not leave any white or blue reflection on my skin which made me very excited.
So how did it perform?
I noticed some new texture on my skin at the end of the first day. I freaked out a little because as someone who dealt with acne for years, I was really hoping it was not a nasty breakout waiting to happen. Fortunately, the texture never got worse and went away after about 3 days of use. As stated before, a little goes a long way so make sure to apply small amounts at a time. I sometimes misjudged the amount I squeezed out and ended up looking too dewy for my liking. On the bright side, it never made me look greasy -just very glowy- or caused an excess of oil production. The cream absorbs fairly quickly and thanks to its moisturizing properties, your skin looks healthier.
Other than the texture I experienced the first few days of trying the Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30, I never got any other reaction (rash, inflammation or itch etc.). The sunscreen behaved very well over my glycolic acid cleanser and toner.
To make sure this would be the right sunscreen for me, I also tried it under my makeup. I applied powder and liquid foundation over it -not at once- and I was very pleased by the results. As expected, the powder took some shine away but other than that, the Black Girl Sunscreen did not negatively impact how my makeup looked. It did not cause any weird reaction; my makeup did not change color, slide off or last not as long as when I do my usual routine.
What now?
I have since continued using the Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 and I will be buying it again. I love it because it dries CLEAR and protects my skin while moisturizing it. Also, I use acids on a regular basis to lighten my scars and hyperpigmentation, therefore, using a good sunscreen was imperative for me and I trust this product to help me on my journey to clear skin.
I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a good sunscreen that dries clear. You can get it on the Black Girl Sunscreen website (they offer international shipping!) or at Target.
I personally bought it from their website. My order was shipped quickly and came well packaged. It took about 3 weeks to get to me, as everything does because I live in a somewhat remote country. The shipping was a bit pricy in my opinion but I thankfully beneficiated from a discount code. Also, I'm not too upset about the price I paid because it is a good product that will last me a while.
