The Kat Von D Lock-It foundation is a vegan full-coverage liquid foundation that comes in 44 shades. Is it Black girl friendly and does it cover hyperpigmentation and acne scars? Here is my review.

The Kat Von D Lock-It foundation is described as a transfer-resistant full coverage foundation and it is available in two sizes - full size ($36) and mini ($18). This is perfect for me because as much as I love makeup, I do not wear it every day so having a smaller sized product makes more sense for me. The foundation comes in 44 shades and offers about 20 shades for women of color.
I am a dark-skinned woman with a somewhat neutral undertone with hints of yellow. Moreover, my face is slightly darker than the rest of my body and I have some hyperpigmentation. This makes it a bit tricky for me to find the right shade match. After looking at the shade description and the models on the Kat Von D website, I decided to get the shade 66C which is described as a deep nutmeg with neutral undertones.

First Impressions

I don't usually gravitate towards full-coverage foundations out of fear of it looking like a mask but I decided to take a leap of faith with this one thanks to the good reviews. A couple of things happened when I got the foundation in the mail that almost made me not want to try the foundation and I think the brand should be mindful of it.
Firstly, I was very disappointed when I got my order in the mail because of the misleading packaging. The Kat Von D mini Lock-It Foundation comes in a seemingly clear plastic tube and I had a mini panic attack when I saw that, what I thought was the foundation, was orange. Sigh of relief, turns out that the orange tint is part of the packaging and does not reflect the color of the foundation.
The second thing that almost made me throw the foundation in a corner to never use again was the swatch. It swatches very opaque, as expected of a full-coverage foundation, but also pasty looking. Swatches usually give you a preview of what the product would look like but in this case, Kat Von D should add a disclaimer that you should allow the foundation to set for about 30 seconds before judging if it would be a good match. I can't imagine the number of people who may have skipped this foundation solely due to the quick swatches customers usually do before purchasing.
Once I got over these two mishaps, I actually gave the product a chance and here are my thoughts.

Review

Kat Von D recommends applying 1-2 droplets on a well-hydrated base. To adequately test the performance of the foundation, I decided to not use any primer or setting spray. I applied a few drops of foundation over my Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 on a very hot day (about 30 degrees Celcius). As expected, it looked very opaque, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it blended and how well it matched my skin tone. The foundation did a very good job of covering my acne scars and hyperpigmentation and it did not make them look, as so many other foundations do, grey/ashy. To be picky, I could have used a bit more coverage in some areas but I was very pleased with how one layer looked. On the other hand, this product is so full-coverage that you will have to add-in a lot of steps to bring your facial definition back. It dried matte, feels like skin and doesn't look cakey. Surprisingly, although the Kat Von D Lock-It foundation is thick, it feels lightweight, very much so that you will forget you are wearing makeup.

Performance

As previously stated, I wore this foundation on a hot day and to finish my makeup look, I applied concealer, setting powder and bronzer. I was happy to see that my sweat would sit on top of my face and not actually make the foundation run, moreover, I only noticed very minimal transfer when I was outside in the heat and none when I was in a cooler environment. I ended up wearing the foundation for about 12 hours and it looked intact by the end of the day. I did not get oily or greasy. Washing it off was somewhat hard as I had to cleanse my face about 3 times so be mindful of that if you have long days and usually feel lazy when it comes to thoroughly washing your face etc.

Final Thoughts

I love the Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation and will purchase it again. It is Black girl friendly and covers imperfections very well. I highly recommend this foundation to people who want to put their face on and go. You will not have to worry about touch-ups as it will not budge all day and won't transfer on clothes either. I also recommend this foundation to others like me who want a product that will cover enough hyperpigmentation/acne scars but fear to look cakey. This foundation will cover enough and blend really well. It is not for those with dry skin or a minimalist makeup routine as you will have to compensate with a lot of products to bring some definition back.

Will you be buying the Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation? What is your go-to full-coverage foundation?
